ABSTRACT:
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart, circulation and blood vessels and is the main cause of mortality and a major cause of morbidity in the world. CVD is the leading cause of deaths, representing an estimated 17.9 million deaths each year, which is alarming. However, most sudden deaths occur in individuals who do not have high- risk profiles. Long-term electrocardiograph (ECG) monitoring is the standard criterion for the diagnosis and early detection of these diseases, so that management and medicines can begin. Over the last decade, many wearable ECG systems have been proposed and are even available in the market. However, such sensors are bulky and suffer from inaccuracies, large power consumption and short battery life. Moreover, the majority of them are based only on ECG monitoring whereas multi-sensor functionality is desirable to holistically monitor several vital signals that can be essential for meaningful home health care, sporting activity and remote patient-doctor communication.
In this talk, Dr. Kafil M. Razeed will briefly discuss the development of a flexible smart multi-modal sensing platform to monitor ECG, respiratory flow, oxygen flow and temperature, powered by body heat energy conversion strategy through high efficiency micro-thermoelectric generator to prolong the life of the battery. Particularly, the development of these micro-thermoelectric generator as a possible future source of renewable energy from the perspective of on-body biomedical applications will be discussed.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Kafil M. Razeeb is a Principal Scientist and Group Leader at Tyndall National Institute in University College Cork. He received his B. Sc. and Masterโ€™s degrees in Applied Physics and Electronics (presently EEE department) from the University of Dhaka, and PhD in the Department of Physics at the University of Limerick. After completing his PhD in 2003, he joined National Microelectronic Research Centre (NMRC), presently known as Tyndall National Institute as a postdoctoral fellow. He became an independent Principal Investigator (PI) in 2005 and commenced developing his core research activities in the application of nanostructured materials in the area of thermal management and thermoelectric, energy storage and sensors. At present, he is leading the Advanced Energy Materials group at Tyndall.
He has authored 1 book 10 invited book chapters and ~116 peer reviewed journal and conference publications. He is a Principal Investigator in Irish Photonic Integration Centre and Funded Investigator of Connect Centre both funded by Science Foundation Ireland. He is also coordinator and PI of two successful EU projects and PI/ Co-PI in many national and EU projects. He became Biosensor & Bioelectronics Top cited author for 2010-2011, recipient of ENIAC Joint Undertaking 2011 Innovation Award for the project โ€œNanoelectronics for an Energy Efficient Electrical Car, E3Carโ€, 2015 UCC Innovation of the Year Award and 2017 Horizon 2020 Champion Award by Enterprise Ireland. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of The Electrochemical Society and Chartered Physicist and Member of Institute of Physics.
